Climate Promise

The United Nations Development Programme’s Climate Promise is the world largest offer of support for countries to develop and deliver their national pledges, Nationally Determined Contributions or NDCs, under the Paris Agreement. The programme has supported 85% of developing countries’ NDCs – over 90% increased mitigation ambition, 88% enhanced adaptation and resilience, 90% included the land and forests, and over 97% included youth.

Currently the Climate Promise is scaling up support for countries to turn their pledges into action on the ground, while continuing to push for greater ambition. This support covers a range of key technical areas, including enhancing political will and ownership across society, strengthening targets and aligning with key national policies, assessing costs and investment opportunities, as well as setting up the systems for monitoring and reporting on progress. From scaling up electric vehicles, increasing access to early warning systems, protecting nature, addressing climate in fragile settings, and promoting green jobs for young entrepreneurs, the Climate Promise works with countries to identify and achieve climate solutions based on national contexts and priorities.

Throughout, the United Nations Development Programme has leveraged its extensive expertise, infrastructure, networks, and breadth of substantive offers to provide comprehensive support that helps countries take bold climate action and transition toward sustainable development.
