BASF approaches to reach net zero CO2 emissions of societies

Case study of BASF

While BASF is continuously working to achieve net zero by 2050 with carbon management & circular economy programs, more and more customers are making environmentally conscious of purchasing decisions. Therefore, BASF has developed a digital tool which enables us to provide reliable PCFs which follow ISO 14067 and global sector PCF guideline of "Together for Sustainability" as well as aligned with GHG protocol for its 45,000 sales products. Customers thus will receive valuable information about the extent to BASF materials contribute to the carbon footprint of their business activities and their own final products. While using industrial averages and values from commercial databases as the basis for calculating upstream Scope 3 emissions, we launched our global Supplier CO2 Management Program in 2021 to obtain a more accurate data base and better manage and reduce emissions in the supply chain in the long term. In the first step, we have since requested the PCFs of our raw materials and support our suppliers in determining these, for example, by sharing our knowledge of valuation and calculation methods with them. In the second step, we want to work with our suppliers on solutions to reduce product-related emissions and establish the PCF as a criterion for purchasing decisions.
